Sweet Soul: A Balanced Life | Cate Brinch of Recycle Studio

As a verb, balance is defined as: “to keep or put (something) in a steady position so that it does not fall”. As a noun, balance is defined as: “an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.” When it comes to my new series “A Balanced Life” I have chosen a few lovely ladies to feature that I believe embody what it means to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle. These women inspire me to keep buying organically (even if it is more expensive and some people just don’t get it), to keep working out (even if it is the first time in my life I am getting fit in a healthy way) and to keep up the positive attitude and energy.

When you run multiple locations of Boston’s original indoor spin studio, developed and implement an intensive spin instructor training program, are a wife, and are a mommy to a human baby and fur baby, then you can only imagine how full your plate must be at all times. Cate Brinch, the owner and operator of Recycle Studio, knows very well how to manage the aforementioned plate as it is her day-to-day and reality. With many accolades such as “Boston’s Best Cycling Studio” from publications like Improper Bostonian and Boston Magazine, we would say that Cate is balancing things pretty well.

Sweet Eats: Welcome to Boston by CHLOE!

As a non-vegan, the fact that I nearly died and went to heaven while trying some menu items at last night’s by CHLOE Grand Opening party should be a testament to how amazingly delicious vegan food can be. The food is 100% vegan/ plant-based, 100% GMO-free, organic,seasonal and locally sourced whenever possible, and they offer nut-free, soy-free and gluten-free options as well. Talk about a health food mecca. All food is made in house and the folks at by CHLOE are doing just what they set out to do: “redefining what it means to eat well”. 

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no neophyte when it comes to the vegan lifestyle or healthy foods in general, I just never knew it could taste this good! I tried mac + “cheese” with shitake “bacon”, “lobster” rolls made out of the inside of bamboo shoots (who knew that was a consumable thing), out of this world pesto pasta and double chocolate “nice” cream that is decadent on it’s own with no help from a cow, goat, sheep or any other animal whose milk humans shouldn’t be digesting in the first place(but that’s for another post). There were mini meatball subs that I had to triple check weren’t real beef meatballs, vegan cupcakes and cookies and 100% organic wine! (phew, did you get all that?). I constantly keep telling myself, and those around me, that I want to eat more plant-based foods, so thank goodness that by CHLOE is here to eliminate any excuses and setbacks to my pending lifestyle.

Thanks to Boston Common Magazine for setting up such a beautiful event last night, and I can’t wait to see the amazing things that by CHLOE does here in Boston! (opens to the public on Thursday, 2/23/17)

Sweet Review: Anna’s Taquería

Now, I’ve never been to Mexico before, so I can’t say with 100% certainty what authentic tacos taste like, but if I had to guess, I’d say Anna’s Taquería hits the nail directly on the head. Serving up tacos, quesadillas and burritos (plus so much more) since 1995, Anna’s (as the locals profoundly call it) has  7 other locations, and is locally owned. 

The staff prepares your order right in front of you and piping hot. If you feel overwhelmed, just ask what they suggest and they won’t steer you wrong. I’m a HUGE fan of their super burritos. I think I’ve tried every meat combination possible, but I’d suggest the Steak en salsa roja with rice, black beans, extra guacamole and sour cream on the side.

The tacos are very affordable, so bring a group of friends and try them all! Kick up the flavor profile a notch and ask for extra spicy sauce on your Chili Verde taco.

Round out your meal with a few bottles of Jarritos (guava is bomb), and you’ve got yourself an amazing Anna’s experience.

Sweet Review: Tom’s Bao Bao

I always believed that food was an art form, but watching the employees stretch, roll, pull, form and fill the baos at Tom’s Bao Bao in Harvard Square was like watching a live art installation; magic before my eyes. A little dramatic? Nope, not when you love food as much as I do!

What is a bao you ask?

A Bao, or baozi as it is known in it’s country of origin: China, is a steam-filled bun usually eaten for breakfast or an on-the-go snack.

Tom’s Bao Bao serves out delicious and authentic baos through a very thorough and precise bao making and steaming process. Each bao weighing about 60 grams and filled with about 40 grams of meat (pork, curry beef, chicken, lobster) or veggies. Once the dough is stretched, hand rolled, hand pulled and hand filled and formed, then they are placed into these intricately made bao baskets and steamed for 10 minutes.

The baskets are hand made in the Fujian province of China. Each time it’s used and with each mark it acquires, the bao baskets develop character and authenticity.

With so much attention to detail and the care that goes into making these baos, it’s no wonder the flavor profiles are through the roof. Using local ingredients such as bok choy, mild curry, smoked tofu, beef, bean sauce etc, the experience makes you feel good for eating and supporting local.
