Sweet Review: Tip Tap Room

Four or so years ago, I ate at the Tip Tap Room for the first time and was blown away by their exotic choice of meat selections on their menu. I had antelope for the first time! Needless to say, I was hooked. I was super excited to continue my Tip Tap Room infatuation last Thursday and try some new items that I knew wouldn’t disappoint.

Chef Brian Poe has to be one of the most genuinely kind and warm human beings I have ever met. I have visited a few restaurants where I’ve had the opportunity to meet the chef, but Chef Poe’s hospitality really made an impression on me. You could tell he really cared and was really attentive and really passionate about the amazing things he’s doing at the Tip Tap Room. Those are the things I remember and that make me want to keep coming back for more.

We got to try several of the small plate apps: kataifi shrimp (amazing), boar meatballs (tender/ melt-in-your-mouth), grilled avocado with lobster, and delicious house-made bread.

For dinner, my boyfriend ordered the bison ribeye which he described as a lighter and healthier option to a heavy steak. I had a few bites and it literally melted in my mouth. I kind of wish I ordered that on top of my entree, so many good dishes to choose from!

I ordered the boar and gnocchi dish which consisted of braised wild boar, roasted garlic, glazed carrots, cauliflower, and parmesan. So-freaking-good! I honestly don’t have gnocchi enough and am over the moon when I get my hands on a plate. I don’t think I’ve had boar before and was quite surprised that it didn’t taste like pork at all, it tasted more like braised short rib.

Now, time for the libations. If you’re a beer person, definitely try their Upland sour beer. So good! It kind of tastes like kombucha mixed with cider. I need to find a case to keep in my fridge for myself. I also had their 2:15am (vodka, pamplemousse liqueur, grapefruit, lemon, soda) and “swipe right”(vodka, pimm’s, lemon + lime, soda) cocktails. *insert okie dokie emoji*

We never have dessert, but Chef Poe was quite convincing and brought us out a lovely chocolate mousse and bread pudding. I have never had bread pudding before and, even though I was full, I devoured the the whole thing. Just look at it, could you blame me?

Thank you Chef Poe and the lovely folks at the Tip Tap Room for a lovely evening and outstanding food. We will definitely be back.

Sweet Review: The Holy Donut | Portland, ME

The new year is in full swing and your sweet tooth is already bugging you, isn’t it?; throwing off your equilibrium every time you walk past the candy or pastry aisle? There has to be a way to indulge in the decadent desserts that are always being paraded in front of us: “sweet truffle double chocolate” this, “crème brûlèed-caramel-toffee-and-marshmellow filled” that. 

Although it is still advised to eat sweets, no matter how “healthy”, in moderation, The Holy Donut is a place where you can check the guilt at the door.

Located in Portland, ME and started by the lovely Leigh, The Holy Donut was created out of a need that Leigh had for a healthier donut option, made from fresh and locally sourced ingredients. She couldn’t find it anywhere near her, so just as a Girl Boss does, she created it herself. Leigh’s donuts are made using one specific ingredient: Maine potatoes. A donut made from a potato? Yeah, I know, sounds weird, but let me tell you, it adds an amazing texture and a more desirable consistency. Although eggs and buttermilk are used in the donut recipe, The Holy Donut also offers Vegan and Gluten-free options which, honestly speaking, taste just the same as the non-vegan options.

You can really tell the difference in taste with these donuts since they use ingredients that are fresh, locally sourced and in season. My favorite flavor would have to the be Vegan berry glazed donut. It was bursting with flavor and melted in my mouth. On top of that I scarfed down the Dark Chocolate sea salt, Hand-squeezed and zested Fresh Lemon, Maple Bacon and Coffee Brandy flavors. My mouth is watering just reading the names of these, I need to get more!

If you ever find yourself taking a trip to Maine to try the famous lobster rolls, make sure you make a pit stop in Portland and grab as many treats from The Holy donut as you can. You’ll never want to settle for a Dunkin Donut or a Krispy Kreme ever again, I’ll tell you that much.

Sweet Review: City Tap House Boston

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name! Okay, so that’s the theme song of Cheers (which is located in Boston, btw), but it can be applied to any neighborhood spot that everyone frequents. The spot where the staff knows that Joe always sits at the table in the back and orders a coke and a black coffee before anything else. The spot where the chef knows that Deidre likes her chicken wings and bacon extra crispy (….so do I Deidre, so do I). The spot where all the young adults run to after work because they know they have a plethora of beer to choose from, and beyond delicious and creative bites to eat. Ladies and gentleman, I have a feeling that City Tap House is that spot for us Bostonians. 

With four other locations (2 in Philly, 1 in DC and 1 in West Palm Beach, FL), City Tap is a place, as they say, that has an extensive and “innovative beer list, as well as craft food that inspires and surprises the palate”(Citytaphouse.comI can put my hand on the bible and vouch for them; the food is amazing, the staff is beyond attentive and full of personality (hey Fhi and Liz!) and the decor is cozy and to-die-for! 

I had the opportunity to attend their Grand Opening with other bloggers and press (check out the photos in the slideshow above) and was so impressed that I came back two days later, in a snowstorm, to try their brunch. The grand opening was one of the best I’ve been to (and I’m not just saying that) and the brunch lived up to the hype I attached to it. At brunch, I immediately ordered the beermosa, as well as the chicken and waffles. Accompaniments included: honey-thyme butter, molasses syrup and red pepper jam.  A side of bacon was also ordered for the table because what brunch is complete without a side of bacon? My boyfriend ordered the roast pork hash and we went half and half on each dish.

This place is more than just a bar, it’s an exploration of great food, creative drinks and a welcoming atmosphere. I cannot wait to go back.

Sweet Review: Double Chin HK Cafe

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Chinatown, on the corner of Harrison and Stuart, sits an almost obscure establishment. Unsurprisingly, if you’re reading this, and you frequent the Chinatown area of Boston, then this restaurant isn’t obscure to you in the least bit….and why would it be? but to me and my “creature-of-habit” ways, I am just now stepping foot into Double Chin; and boy am I happy I did….(yes, I did just say “boy”….I’m officially getting old)

Two very important things you should know about this place is that #1 they serve alcohol and #2 they stay open late night…you know, the “late-night” you used to yearn for during a night out at college; the party after the party, if you will…minus the annoying frat boys. When you go, be sure to try their newest drink pictured above. It’s called “Under the Sea” and has Soju (Korea’s most popular alcoholic drink), lychee and gummy worms! It’s not too strong or too sweet and can be shared with friends or thrown back by your lonesome…we won’t judge.

The feast that took place during this visit was unbelievably incredible, and full of umami. We started off with the crispy salt and pepper wings which were cooked to perfection. If you know me or follow me on Instagram, then you know that I am picky about my wings (extra, extra crispy please, leave the sogginess behind).

Quickly after the wings were placed in front of us and devoured instantaneously, we were, dare I say, #blessed with a Mac & Cheese skillet (wide rice noodles, cheese, bacon, scallion, panko), Poutine Your mouth (waffle fries topped with kimcheese, sriracha mayo, scallion & seaweed seasoning) and avocado toast (egg and furikake)

And as if the cheese porn couldn’t get any better, it just did! We were then served Portuguese Chicken Rice topped with coconut milk and turmeric cheese. I know, it sounds like “huh?!” but everything just meshed well together and formed a complete palatable adventure for my mouth.

Not surprisingly, my favorite of the night was the vermicelli “pizza” with soft shell crab…what can I say? I love seafood! Pizza is in quotes due to the fact that this wasn’t at all a pizza, but it did have layers, and each layer was bursting with flavor and was enjoyed thoroughly.

But the real star of the night was the Berry Healthy (no joke, that’s the actual name) “cubed toast”. It’s basically fried brioche toast, sliced and diced, and topped with vanilla ice cream, berries, pocky, mochi, granola and strawberry sauce. PHEW!

I’m not afraid to admit it….we ate every single last bite.
