As a verb, balance is defined as: “to keep or put (something) in a steady position so that it does not fall”. As a noun, balance is defined as: “an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.” When it comes to my new series “A Balanced Life” I have chosen a few lovely ladies to feature that I believe embody what it means to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle. These women inspire me to keep buying organically (even if it is more expensive and some people just don’t get it), to keep working out (even if it is the first time in my life I am getting fit in a healthy way) and to keep up the positive attitude and energy.
Could it be her bright, beaming smile? Or the fact that she is a fellow Jamaican gyal? Perhaps it’s her hustle spirit (founder and owner of Cameo Macaron food truck and contestant for Miss Universe Jamaica) that drew me to Balanced Babe number ten, Ms. Kinesha Goldson. What ever it was, I am so happy I clicked “follow” on her Instagram page and am able to gain daily inspiration from her on the “Balanced Babe” and fitness front. It is comforting to know that there are still women out there who know that they’re beautiful, but prefer to lead with their brain. She is ambitious and a true inspiration; I hope she inspires you too!
1. What does a Balanced Life mean to you?
Balance is all about being able to do the things you need to do and the things you love to do.
2. Do you have an AM and PM routine that contributes to your balanced life?
I strongly believe that getting into a routine of waking up early is paramount. It’s like buying extra time. My most productive days start at 4:30/5am. I wake up, read emails, watch CNN & read the Skimm then head to the gym at around 6. It frees up my evenings (especially in the summer) for whatever comes up.
3. What is your definition of self-love and positive body image?
It’s really hard to say. I’ve struggled with this for some time now. I try to make the best decisions for my body in terms of diet and exercise but I don’t punish myself when I fall off track. You have to love yourself and be able to bounce back from a bad weekend of boozy brunches and asking for more bread.
4. What are some ways you stay active and foods you eat to achieve a balanced mind, body and soul (favorite workout routines, favorite healthy dish/ snack etc.)?
When I first joined Equinox, I knew I had to commit to my fitness goals because it was such a hefty investment. I decided to rent a locker and keep my makeup bag & hair tools there. In order to look presentable at work, I had to go to the gym. Eventually it became so routine that I felt tired and groggy when I didn’t go. I haven’t missed more than 3 consecutive days since. That was 4 years ago.
