SweetFit: Tabata, or not Ta-bata?

Like that title?

Aside from the clever play on words, that is exactly what was going through my mind as I entered the big room in the back of my gym (you know the one with the huge glass windows so everyone can see you make a fool of yourself)   and was told by a middle-aged lady that this class would “kick my ass”. (mind you, it was 5:45 in the morning. Did I really want an ass kicking that early in my day?)

It was too late. I woke up, packed my gym bag, T’d (or “train/trolley” for you non-Bostonians) it to the gym and there was no turning back. The teacher came in, commanded us to get our mats, medicine ball, and 2 sets of weights, one easy and one a little heavier.

Now it was time to get my ass kicked.

If you have never taken a tabata class, I HIGHLY recommend it. I never sweat when I do anything, I may glisten a little, but I don’t drip sweat….ever. At the end of this class I had sweat around the collar of my shirt and was perspiring from every other place that has a sweat gland (TMI…my apologies, but it’s true). Sweat, my friends, is a sign of an awesome work-out.

Tabata is a high intensity interval training work-out (HIIT).

The structure of the program is:
Workout hard for 20 seconds
Rest for 10 seconds
Complete eight rounds

Example: 20 second high-knees with weights, rest. 20 second burpees, rest. 20 mountain climbers, rest. and then combine each of those work-outs into one for 20 seconds.

Here is a video on youtube that gives you an idea of what it’s like.

I left that class with my abdominals, thighs, arms and butt aching….it literally kicked my ass, but in the best way possible.

I had so much energy for the rest of my day. I challenged myself and didn’t quit.

I surprised my own self!

blow your mind
